Why do cracks leak water?

The reason cracks leak water is because when it rains, the water runs through the ground. The first couple feet of water will run into the ground easily because the dirt is loose and can absorb the water fast. Around 3-4 feet deep, the ground turns to clay and slows the water down. Water will follow the easiest path of resistance. When the water hits the clay and slows down, it will find its way through the crack and into the basement. These basic cracks can be fixed most of the time with polyurethane foam or epoxy injection.
